Cylinders

In the simplest terms the cylinder is the part of the lockset where you put the key. In the center of the cylinder is the actual location for the key to be inserted called the plug.  The grooves in the key that allow it to fit into the cylinder is what determines the keyway.  The cylinder can usually be removed from the lock to facilitate rekeying. Standardized forms of cylinders include Key in Knob, Rim and Mortise types.
